Overview of my career journey unil now

  • My mother wanted me to be a computer programmer, but clearly meant to be a rock star
  • In 1997 I discovered the WWW, learned HTML & became a dev in a Web Development Unit at a University in Brisbane (curses, Mother).
  • Since then I have worked in Boston, MA; returned to Australia and the University, and even walked away from the web for a time developing software at a mail house.
  • In 2007 I came to my senses, moved to Melbourne and joined a web shop working on what would become a ticketing SaaS.
  • When they ran out of money (happens) in September 2011, I started my own freelance mobile & web shop (terrible)
  • In January 2013 I stopped freelancing and joined SpiderOak... working from home still, developing their mobile apps. I still totally reckon the rock star thing isn't off the table.

Took 18 years to get here

But NOT because it takes that long to get successful

In 1997, phones were huge... well... a different kind of huge.

No connection to the internet, certainly no apps

2007 Changed that with the iPhone, and even that took a year to take off in AU

What does your job entail?

Mobile software engineer.

I make apps.

I do everything from designing the user interface to coding the logic that makes the app and its animations work

Pros

  • Obviously, this industry generally pays very well
  • It can be getting paid to do the thing you love. The line between my job and hobbies is pretty thin...
  • There are a lot of jobs out there and likely to stay that way. "Software is eating the world".
  • A creative job, but also involves problem solving and logic.

Cons

  • Work/life balance needs to be seriously considered
  • Working hours can be rough, especially with an impending deadline
  • Sedentary. Sit around all day. Exercise is important. I am not a good example :)

What would a student need to do/study to do what you are doing?

  • A computer science degree is not 100% needed, but can be very useful
  • It teaches you how to think, more than actually teaching you the langs you'll use
  • Those you should really learn on your own
  • It's possible to do it ALL on your own
  • I don't have a completed degree...

Where are the future jobs in your area?

  • PC sales going down, mobile/tablet sales going up
  • Internet usage is way more common on phones/tablets
  • Everything from shopping, banking, communicating, games

mobile! mobile! mobile!

Also, IoT

  • Internet of THINGS
  • Your fridge on the internet, your car on the internet...
  • Brings with it challenges for privacy, security
