What is SPECIATION?

Speciation is a lineage splitting event that produces two or more separate species.

The formation of new and distinct species in the course of evolution. 

reproductive isolation

The mechanisms of reproductive isolation or hybridization barriers are the collection of mechanisms, behaviors and physiological processes that prevent the members of two different species that cross or mate from producing offspring, or which ensure that any offspring that may be produced.



geographic isolation

Geographic isolation is a term that refers to a population of animals, plants, or other organisms that are separated from exchanging genetic material with other organisms of the same species. Typically geographic isolation is the result of an accident or coincidence.

A large gene pool indicates high genetic diversity, increased chances of biological fitness, and survival. A small gene pool indicates low genetic diversity, reduced chances of acquiring biological fitness, and increased possibility of extinction.

ALLOPATRY

Occurring in separate, nonoverlapping geographic areas. Often used of populations of related organisms unable to crossbreed because of geographic separation.



LASTLY COSPECIATION
cospeciation- If the association between two species is very close, they may speciate in parallel. 

 
It is especially likely to happen between parasites and their hosts.
Why is it important to know speciation??
(basically, ask why we are learning this)

(Speciation has been a major focus of evolutionary biology)
The reason we are learning about speciation is to understand how new species have arise.

Notice how species split into two groups that no longer share the same gene pool.

Speciation Activity

1.Be in groups of 3-5 students

2.Your group will be isolated on an island (table) that has a unique environment.

3.As a group you must select and write down all phenotype characteristics that exist in your group that may improve your group’s survival on your island


4.Imagine that your group has been able to reproduce for atleast 500+ generations (assume no mutations occurred) describe the typical member of your population.

5.Now assume that many small mutations occurred over the next 500+ generations.  If a mutation improves survival in your environment it will be passed through future generations.

6. Compare your island population to the other populations that have developed in this exercise.

7. Do you think that your new population is genetically different from any of the other populations in the class?


8. Do you think any of the populations in the class could represent a new species?
