Analysis of digipaks

To get ideas for our own album cover - it was wise to analyse some REAL LIFE digipaks to see what they consist of. I looked at some similar to our artist & brand image :)

1. Ellie goulding - Bright Lights

Genre: Indie Pop
Colour scheme: Warm yellows/golds & white
Shot type of artist: Medium close up. Blurred background
Focuses on: Hair (femininity)
Text: Large artist name, small album name - Light text font adds to feminine theme\

Ellie Goulding has a young female audience/fanbase (Just like our artist Eva Ellis)
  • We will take inspiration from her as she is successful in selling records to this audience, also in the UK

2. Lana del rey - Born to die

Genre: Indie/Art pop
Location: Outside (features green nature)
Colour scheme: Blue/white (natural colours)
Shot type: Medium close up (composition: artist positioned in middle to establish clear focus of audience's view)
(simple background to focus on artist)

Makeup: Red Lips (stand out from light colours - attract male gaze)
Costume: Simple, not taking attention away from artists face/image
Text: White (feminine again, smaller album title - large artist name)

3. Taylor Swift - fearless

Genre: Country Pop
Location: internal studio (simple white background) All attention on Taylor Swift
Text: Font gives effect of real handwritten text. (Natural -white & brown)

Overall Colour scheme: White, Yellow, Brown
Shot type: Medium Close Up - focuses on artists hair and face (feminine) attracting males and other young girls
Costume: White & Simple - keeps attention on artist herself

As Taylor Swift is one of our biggest inspirations (same pop genre, romantic based songs, teenage girl audience and indie natural brand image) - I decided to look at another one of her digipak covers..

  • This one has an external environment (green nature goes with the indie vibe)
  • All text fonts are in a handwritten style.
  • Background is blurred and softened, but visibly able to see that it is nature.

  • She is positioned towards the side - enabling the rule of thirds for info to be added
    • Background is blurred and softened, but visibly able to see that it is nature.

I will take the most inspiration from this digipak - it injects the most colour making it eyecatching but also keeps the artist simply beautiful - Taylor's niche audience fits in with ours too - and this kind of outdoors shot links to our externally filmed music video
